Savior, Like a Shepherd, Lead Us
Wherever He Leads I'll Go
He Leadeth Me
I'll Follow Him With Rejoicing
Lead, Kindly Light
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
A contemporary Christian song that I really like, along the same vein, is "Help Me Find It" by the Sidewalk Prophets:
I don’t know where to go from here
It all used to seem so clear
I’m finding I can’t do this on my own
I don’t know where to go from here
As long as I know that You are near
I’m done fighting
I’m finally letting go
I will trust in You
You’ve never failed before
I will trust in You
[Chorus:]
If there’s a road I should walk
Help me find it
If I need to be still
Give me peace for the moment
Whatever Your will
Whatever Your will
Can you help me find it
Can you help me find it
I’m giving You fear and You give faith
I giving you doubt
You give me grace
For every step I’ve never been alone
Even when it hurts, You’ll have Your way
Even in the valley I will say
With every breath
You’ve never let me go
I will wait for You
You’ve never failed before
I will wait for You
[Chorus]
I lift my empty hands (come fill me up again)
Have Your way my King (I give my all to You)
I lift my eyes again (Was blind but now I see)
‘Cause You are all I need
[Chorus]
As we walk down this road of life, and as we grow older, we come to realize more and more that we have to rely on God's guidance; we're too good at getting ourselves into messes on our own. But hard on the heels of learning (sometimes the hard way) that we need God's guidance, is the awareness that we have to choose to go the way that God is leading us. God won't force us to go where we are not willing to go. And that willingness to follow God, no matter what, requires complete trust in Him and subjugation of our will in preference to His will.
That's easy to write on paper. But it's so hard to enact in our lives. So God blesses us with hymns which stick in our memory so that we have the encouragement internally to follow Him! When things get hard we sing to ourselves, I'll follow my Christ who loves me so; wherever He leads I'll go. When we're tempted to complain, we sing, "Lord, I would clasp Thy hand in mine, nor ever murmur or repine; content whatever lot I see since 'tis Thine hand that leadeth me." When we get tired, we sing, "Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn."
What a blessing music is to us! With it we can pour out our fears and worries to God. We can praise Him for who He is. We can ask for His blessings. But we can also use the music to strengthen our hearts to follow Him with rejoicing! The future lies unseen ahead, It holds I know not what; But still I know I need not dread, For Jesus faileth not. I'll follow Him with rejoicing, with rejoicing, rejoicing; I know he safely will lead me to my eternal home.
