I love this joke from cybersalt.org! I love the truth which makes it humorous: dogs enjoy life. They enjoy almost every part of life. They are excited to see me when I get up in the morning. They are ecstatic when I walk out the front door. They bark for dog biscuits when they don't particularly want them. They greet me when I come home with tail wags and doggie grins - even if I was gone for only a couple of minutes. Dogs are really good for my self-esteem.
But more than affirming someone loves me no matter what, my dogs remind me to enjoy life. Our great God must be terribly disgusted with me when I'm bored or I'm complaining.
1 Corinthians 10:10 says, "nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer."
and Deuteronomy 28:47-48 says, "Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything . . ."
I think my dogs help me keep life in perspective. They help me to not take myself too seriously. They help me to enjoy life because they are enjoying it so much.
For instance: The other day, Ebony was walking with me around the pond. I saw the boys working in the garden, so I told her to go see them. She stopped, looked to see who was there, and dashed headlong to greet her boys. Her brakes don't work well once she gets going, so she overran Christopher. He generously offered her a corn cob, which she was moving to take when she realized I was still walking . . . and she was missing out on the walk! So she started to dash headlong to catch up with me, only she neglected to notice that Christopher was in her path and she dashed headlong into him, kind of bounced back, gathered herself, and took off to rejoin me with her doggie grin intact. How Christopher and I laughed!!
God has so greatly blessed us! And amid all the myriad of blessings sits a black lab who is an unexpected, but definite, blessing. I rejoice in her antics and praise God for Him giving her to us!
