Shine On

The sun will no more be your light by day...for the LORD will be your everlasting light.
                                                      Isaiah 60:19 (NIV)
We have a large foyer window above our front door and even with a thin layer of dust the sun is absolutely blinding as it shines through that window at sunrise. I try to avoid it as I descend the stairs on cloudless mornings but sometimes that light is unavoidable. I may duck and try to shade my eyes from that blinding light, but it usually doesn't work. That light seems intent on getting in my face! You know, I realized one morning that I'd rather have that light follow me down those stairs than walk down without it. It seems on those sunny days that I need to be reminded that there is a Light that is always with me. His beaming presence fills the space around me and protects me from the darkness that wants to pervade my being. Whenever the day is dark, with earthly clouds or spiritual warfare, I need to call upon that Light to lead me away from the gloom and dreariness that settles upon me. The Light, Jesus Christ, doesn't get in my face, though. He takes His place before me and I want to follow Him. There are many important truths to be found in scripture that apply to the concept of light, but the best and most perfect object lessons we have are those the Father gave us in His Son- the eternal, ever-burning light- Jesus, our Messiah. Let the Light shine on in your life and bathe you with His presence.
For God, who said, " let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
                                               2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIV)

Tangled Wires

9/22/2013

The big storage cabinet in my classroom houses a large, black trash bag that contains a mass of tangled wire.  This bothered me for a long time.  The colored wire was a gift from a well-meaning art teacher. I had gone to her asking for suggestions on the type of wire to purchase for wire sculptures. Before I knew what was happening, this black bag was in my hands. She smiled in satisfaction and I thanked her for her donation. As I walked away, though, I wondered how in the world I was going to untangle this horrible mass of wire. The students were going to have a terrible time trying to pull the wire apart if I didn't find a quick way to untangle it. If I let the students try to untangle it, there would be so much wasted class time! So I hefted this bag on a table, inspected the contents again and tried to untangle just a few wires, but it was hopeless. I just couldn't return the bag after the art teacher's generosity. When the time came for creating the wire sculptures, I pulled out that bag, opened it up and revealed this mess of wire to my students. I expected them to look at me in horror but can you believe it? They were thrilled! They looked at me with such pleasure and excitement that I just stared and marveled at the moment. Hands dove into the bag and they yanked apart pieces of wire, grabbed scissors and started cutting away. They thanked me many times over. What I had thought to be a miserable, tangled mess was actually a blessing in disguise for the delight it brought my students that day, and for many days afterwards. They had faith, child-like faith that something beautiful could be created from that wire. And guess what? Those sculptures were beautiful, intricate pieces of art.
Do you see the analogy of our woeful lives and that tangled mess of wire? Do you have the faith of a child? Do you believe that your life can be untangled, and that from it something beautiful can be created? If you are a Christian, you should be nodding your head. But be on guard that your child-like faith isn't lost in the busyness of your everyday life. Check daily that you aren't collecting a mess and believing it will always remain so; that it can't be untangled. Stay close to the Savior in these days of trials. Give Him that bag of messes. Let Him sculpt you into a masterpiece. Keep your child-like faith.

Fully Committed

Visitors to our church are always welcome, but this past weekend we had some good friends of ours from Iowa come in to town for a few days. We have known Cynthia's mom, Sally, and dad, Bill, for many years but it is always a treat to spend time in their company. On Sabbath, Bill facilitated the bible study, which could have had a couple of different titles: Kings of Israel/Judah; Favorite Scripture; King Asa; or Fully Committed. I decided on Fully Committed.
Sometimes when I'm trying to determine what God is saying to me, I consider what I have remembered from bible readings or studies that has stuck with me. Here I am a few days removed from the study and that phrase keeps resounding in my ears. To what or whom am I really committed? To my husband and family? Yes! To my friends? Most of the time. My work? Yes unless it conflicts with the teachings of the Lord. To myself? I think of myself way too often! I call this "pride". To my Lord and Savior? I think that I am. I want to be. But I know that many times I think more of what I want to do and how I want to do it, than what or how I should it- as for the Lord.

For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
                                                       2 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV)

I have committed myself to many people and many things in my lifetime but I know that I have not always kept those commitments. Oh, you know, it may have looked okay on the outside but when it came right down to it, my heart was not completely "in" to fulfilling what I said that I would do. I just wanted to get it finished even if the job wasn't to the best of my ability. It was simply something I could cross off my list as "done".  The work was done half-heartedly, not whole-heartedly, or fully committed. I only went through the motions of doing it well. Cynthia and I co-taught at the Feast one year and she had sewn a couple of hearts to use as object lessons. Obviously it made quite an impact on me if I still remember and refer back to them after all this time. The hearts were in all kinds of conditions: whole, part, half. The lesson was to demonstrate to the kids what kind of heart the Lord is looking for in His people. This is so applicable to all of our lives, isn't it? What condition do we find our heart in when we do a close examination of our daily lives?
This is where Bill's study and 2 Chronicles 16:9 lead me: I want to live my life for the purpose of fulfilling what the Lord gives me to do and I don't want it to be something to just check off of a "to-do" list. When I think of the LORD's eyes on me, I want Him to see my heart and know at a glance that it is full to the brim with devotion to Him, first and always. Yet, upon examination of my heart, I can conclude that this is not always the case. Too many times I choose to do that which is self-serving; out of selfish ambition.  When I examine my heart, its true condition is revealed.  On days that I feel out-of-sorts, restless, and weak, is it because I am not putting the Lord first, like I said I would when I declared Him my God and Savior? How can He, and why would He, strengthen someone whose heart is divided in its devotion to Him?

During the study, Bill also reminded us of the meaning of "good", the Hebrew word "tov"- be where you're supposed to be, doing what you're supposed to do. This is what I, and many others, want to hear upon the return of Jesus:

"Well done, good and faithful servant".
                                                        Matthew 25:21 (NIV)

The conclusion of my reflection on "fully committed" is that I want to completely and whole-heartedly serve the Lord.  I want my days to be lived well and good, and faithfully devoted to Him.

Hello! My name is Diane and I live in St. Peters, MO, with my husband, Keith. We have four sons, ranging from age 28-41. Three sons are married, one with two children, Gavin, age 9, and Brooke, age 7. One of our other married sons lives near Denver, Colorado. He and his wife have two children, Jace, age 6, and Eden, who is a year and a half.
In May 2015, I retired from public school teaching. I've been kept busy by ever-growing to-do lists that include some of my favorite hobbies- reading, writing, embroidering, traveling, and watching my favorite sports team, the St. Louis Cardinals, try to stay in contention for another World Series ring.
I hope you'll visit the website often, and will post comments when you have time :-)
