What Are You Searching?

10/7/2013

My husband and I took a car ride last night looking for the new moon. We were a bit doubtful that it would be visible due to the heavy cloud coverage but away we went, eyes ever searching. Keith has a favorite look-out spot so we parked ourselves there, at the top of a highway overpass, and looked to the sky. And we looked. We craned our necks and exclaimed that if only those clouds would move we'd see it. They didn't budge. Now, south of us there was this beautiful, bright and clear sky that caused us some grief. Why couldn't be that clear for us? Well, our friends saw it and they called to tell us and celebrate their sighting with us. Hmmm... while we didn't begrudge their joy, and that phone call was certainly thoughtful of them, how much did it really mean to us? We continued to drive to several spots for about 30 minutes before we finally surrendered to the truth: this month we would not see the new moon that was ushering in our fall holy day season. Next month we'll look again and maybe we'll be ready to make a phone call and share our excitement over the sighting.
I couldn't decide what made me so restless after we got home. Was it that we should have known that with all the clouds we wouldn't see the moon? Was it disappointment after the days of anticipation of the sighting for this specific month? I surmised that it was a combination of both and didn't give it any more thought until this morning. The whole idea of searching for something, pursuring something, brought to mind our Christian walk. Even after baptism and conversion, even after embracing a life far different than before, we still are in pursuit of something: righteousness. It's there, but we can't seem to grasp hold of it because we haven't completely surrendered our flesh to Christ. He isn't hiding behind something, like the clouds that hid the new moon from our eyes. The bible should reveal Him to us but is that where we go to find Christ? Or do we simply think we'll figure this life out all on our own? Remember, that's why we confessed Him as our Savior! He saved us from the wretched life we had made for ourselves! Jesus Christ does not change who He is from month to month, like the moon. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. There isn't disappointment when we open God's word looking for answers just to find that they're different from the words you read the day before. Yes, His word can be puzzling at times, but it isn't a puzzle. The word is a road map that leads straight to Jesus Christ.
                                                      Seek righteousness, seek humility.
                                                      Hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.
While it may seems like Jesus Christ isn't there, He is. We're off track. We've lost sight of what's important. Living for Jesus, our Savior, should be our daily goal. Remember His faithfulness: He will never leave you nor forsake you.
If you're searching for something because you're experiencing disappointment, go in search of Jesus Christ. If you need answers and direction, go to Him. Go to the bible! Read and study how to live according to God's way! Read what Jesus said about how to live righteously. Search for Him daily. And when you've found Him, follow Him with joy and gladness! Your search for righteousness is in Christ alone.

Hello! My name is Diane and I live in St. Peters, MO, with my husband, Keith. We have four sons, ranging from age 28-41. Three sons are married, one with two children, Gavin, age 9, and Brooke, age 7. One of our other married sons lives near Denver, Colorado. He and his wife have two children, Jace, age 6, and Eden, who is a year and a half.
In May 2015, I retired from public school teaching. I've been kept busy by ever-growing to-do lists that include some of my favorite hobbies- reading, writing, embroidering, traveling, and watching my favorite sports team, the St. Louis Cardinals, try to stay in contention for another World Series ring.
I hope you'll visit the website often, and will post comments when you have time :-)
