Deuteronomy
The fifth book of the Old Testament, this book means "second law." It reviews and explains God's work with His people and encourages renewed commitment to God. This commitment is prompted by God's love and blessings. It is to be expressed through loyalty and obedience. Deuteronomy explains repeatedly that God's way is the way to true life (Deuteronomy 30:19-20).
Deuteronomy was delivered by Moses shortly before he died. He commissioned Joshua as the next leader of God's people (Deut 34:5-12). The book contains Moses' addresses to the people of Israel in Moab on the edge of the Promised Land. Deuteronomy reviews the Ten Commandments and strongly emphasizes the first commandment (Deuteronomy 6:4-5).
