The Gospels
The Gospels are the first four books of the New Testament. They tell about Christ's physical birth and life, His death and resurrection. They give us the very words of Jesus Christ as he walked and talked with His disciples and the people to whom He was sent.
Matthew was a tax collector and one of the original 12 disciples. The book of Matthew is for becoming a disciple and making disciples of others. It focuses on Jesus as the supreme Teacher and the promised Messiah.
Mark was likely John Mark, who was a writer for Peter, but he was not one of the original twelve disciples. Its clear and fast-moving style focuses on Jesus' ministry and miracles.
Luke, the physician, was not one of the original twelve disciples, but traveled extensively with the apostle Paul. Luke is credited with being one of the most historically accurate books ever - even among secular historians. That means his writings have been found to be reliable, proven by other historical documents and artifacts.
John, one of the sons of Zebedee, was one of the original twelve disciples. This book, which most scholars attribute to him, focuses on Jesus as the Son of God, His miracles or signs, and His teachings to individuals and groups. The main purpose of this book is "that you may believe."
