Maybe it's because we are sinful creatures. The carnal mind is enmity against God. We need a new nature, a change that is permanent. We need a Savior. The only Savior is our Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. We need Him desperately to work in us, to change us from the inside out, to bring us to the day of completion!
Once the Holy Spirit dwells within us, then we need the determination, the desire, and the will to continue on the path to holiness. That path is not easy. There are many temptations to go back to the way we were. It was easier. It was more satisfying to the flesh. But it wasn't right and the Holy Spirit within us reminds us that it wasn't right.
We can also be reminded by those around us who exhort, encourage, and edify us to pursue God, to seek His face, to stay on the path of holiness. But they can't lift us up if we never see them. So we must not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. We need it for ourselves and for the people with whom we meet.
It is a new year, at least by the world's reckoning. It's time to
1) draw closer to God (Psalm 73:28);
2) pursue holiness (Hebrews 12:14);
3) become more deeply involved in church (Hebrews 10:25);
4) exhort and encourage your brothers and sisters in Christ (Hebrews 10:24).
Those resolutions will keep us busy all year long!
Selah!
