I saw this on one of the church signs near our home. I couldn’t help thinking about it - which is probably what they intended.
First of all, Jesus Christ can warm our winter days. As Creator, He has power over the forces of nature, which He showed very dramatically a couple of times. In Mark 4:35-41, we read when Jesus calmed the storm. The disciples reaction was, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” There is absolutely no doubt that our God can and does change the weather!
Perhaps, though, we should take this statement a little deeper: What if the statement means that Jesus can provide encouragement, warmth - so to speak, regardless of the chilly and chilling events in our lives? Perhaps it was meant to be an encouragement that regardless of our situation we should learn to be content (Phil 4:11-13), that “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Perhaps it’s meant as an assertion that our God is Sovereign; He triumphs over the troubles we will have in this life. (John 16:33) He and He alone brings life and warmth into our lives - we who were slaves to sin and dead.
I think about these things as I drive by the church sign. And then I have a final thought:
Perhaps the person who posted the letters on the sign was just cold when he (or she) was looking for the right sign to put up for the next month - and this one seemed appropriate. After all, I’m cold right now, and I appreciate the thought of being warm.
